Join us for an evening of three very different dance works by South East local, and internationally renowned, award-winning choreographer, Lewis Major. Performed by his company, Lewis Major Projects and a cadre of elite Limestone Coast youth dancers, this is a chance to sample world-class dance and international performers alongside the dance stars of tomorrow.
In an Australian Premiere and fresh off the back of seasons in Edinburgh and Hollywood, Spaces Between Us is a duet about distance and touch – completely in tune with the current state of the world.
Another Australian Premiere, Island was originally created by Major on Tsoying Dance Company in Taiwan but here, has been reworked for local youth dancers to perform alongside the company. Fast-paced, cinematic and with a pumping soundtrack, Island is contemporary dance at full speed.
Rounding off the evening is Epilogue, “an intriguing, inspirational encounter between classicism and modernity” (Sanjoy Roy, The Guardian). A solo dancer on a stage of white, Epilogue is a deconstruction of and a meditation on, classicism and the role that beauty has played in the shaping of the Western canon.
This project incorporates a professional training exercise with local dance students from around the South East and beyond who have spent the past two months being mentored by Lewis Major and dancers from his company. The students will be presenting the performance alongside company members as a conclusion to this project.
Black Box Live will also be live-streaming the event world-wide on the evening, direct from the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre. Purchase tickets to the livestream here.
