Aboriginal Art Prize Exhibition

ResizedThe fourth annual Malka Aboriginal Art Prize is now showing in Port Augusta. The exhibition officially opened this month at the Port Augusta Cultural Centre – Yarta Purtli with a record 42 entries.  Artists from right across the northern region of South Australia have entered.

The Art Prize commenced in 2010 and has quickly become an important Indigenous arts event. The exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous art and culture and is scheduled to coincide with NAIDOC Week each year.

Arts Officer, Ellenor Day, said “this year’s exhibition is bigger than ever before with both gallery spaces at the Port Augusta Cultural Centre – Yarta Purtli full of entries.  The Malka Aboriginal Art Prize has grown steadily over the past three years and this year we have had a huge increase in the number of artists participating. The quality of work is also outstanding which is great to see.”  Judging will take place during NAIDOC Week with winners to be announced at the end of the exhibition.

Malka is a word used by a number of Aboriginal language groups within the Port Augusta region, and it means ‘mark’ or ‘painting’.
