BATPIORI means “Scattered Trees” in the language of the Traditional Custodians of this area the Peramangk Peoples. The name is derived by the density of the original vegetation of the site. The name was also given to the collection as a sign of respect and of recognition to members of the “Stolen Generation”.
The BATPIORI Public Art Project has resulted in four beautiful panels that have assisted in creating a place of reflection and importance for the Mount Barker Community. The Laratinga Wetlands have provided the perfect environment to compliment these inspiring works.
The real credit for these masterworks belongs to local artist Matt Jonas and the crew of young artists whose creative learnings and shared journey have resulted in these rich portrayals of life and experience. Thanks are given to all of the mentors of the young artists who provided invaluable support and insight that is reflected in the quality outcomes achieved.
The project was the result of productive partnerships between Peramangk people, the Department of Education and Childhood Development, Country Arts SA, the Adelaide Hills Community Health Service and the District Council of Mount Barker.
