Artist Rosa Merlino will be in Port Augusta at the end of October to stage an exhibition exploring ‘The Hidden Identity’ of the Coorong at Yarta Purtli Gallery.
The artist will also be doing a free artist talk and workshop at the Gallery during her visit on Thursday 31 October 6pm-8.30pm. Local artists and art enthusiasts in the community will have the opportunity to learn the techniques that Ms Merlino uses in creating her unique artworks. They will also create their very own artwork using paper and natural materials.
Ms Merlino said her exhibition and artwork style represents her connection to her environment. “The work is designed to open up a dialogue between the known environment and the artist. I have had a longstanding relationship with the Coorong with a major focus on water issues.
“The body of work is a result of investigation and experimentation with available materials and is made up of different plants, dirts, dyes and found objects,” she said.
Ellenor Day, Arts Officer at the Cultural Centre, said the artist talk and workshop is the last major event for the Yarta Purtli Gallery program for 2013. “This wraps up a busy year in art workshops and events for us and whilst we will continue to have some great new exhibitions over the Summer, our workshop program will recommence in February 2014,” she said.
