An exhibition of West Coast Artwork
Streaky Bays’ ArtsUp celebrated a triumphant SALA exhibition opening in Streaky Bay on Sunday 23 August 2015.
The Streaky Bay community turned out in numbers to be a part of state-wide SALA celebrations when the local community group ArtsUp launched their first exhibition in almost a decade.
August was visual art month in South Australia! Since its inception in 1998 the annual SALA Festival has celebrated and promoted the diverse talents of South Australian Living Artists in hundreds of exhibition spaces throughout metropolitan and regional South Australia.
Mayor Sherron MacKenzie, District Council of Streaky Bay acknowledged in her opening speech the amount of practising artists in Streaky Bay and praised the quality of the artworks. Mayor MacKenzie recognised that there was opportunity for the arts community and Council to further collaborate in support of the arts in the region.
A wide variety of 30 creative artworks was on display for the exhibition of West Coast artwork which included photography. The exhibition themes challenged artists to explore and reimagine connection to place and, celebrate the diversity and resilience of our regional arts community.
Seventy people attended the FREE exhibition opening while another 60 viewed the exhibition throughout the week. Four pieces of artwork were sold which is a great outcome and investment in local artists.
Up, Up and Away featured five art works from the recent ‘KicksArt‘ project, a residency with highly regarded visiting artist Annalise Rees. That project challenged artists to explore connection to place in 2D and 3D with experimentation across different techniques and mediums.
The ArtsUp committee catered with some tasty nibbles and provided great prizes for a raffle on the day. With an opportunity to join the arts conversation, see great art, win great prizes in the fundraising raffle and become a ‘Friend of ArtsUp’ it was a highly successful way to ‘KicksArt’ the Streaky Bay visual arts revival!
ArtsUp wish to sincerely acknowledge their committee, volunteers and community and, the support and collaboration of Country Arts SA, the District Council of Streaky Bay and SALA.
